Little Big Fighters

by Detlef B. Bothe

    Synopsis

Why don't we let it come back to life?
Hans-Herbert Wiegandt (74) asks the headmaster of the Martino-Katharineum grammar school in Braunschweig this question. This refers to the work of the educationalist Konrad Koch, who introduced rugby sport in Germany to this school in 1871. H. Wiegandt has been playing rugby since 1970 and is an old shool maker who knows that everything starts small.
He was successful in setting up a rugby club for girls and boys in order to found a rugby club with tireless efforts. However, the real challenge remains to find enough youngsters and the trainer Wiegandt also finds special ways and means.
His U16 team is made up of different nations and religions: Germans and migrants, including some refugees. He brings the different characters together and forms big fighters from the little ones until they finally drive to their first game tournament in an old VW bus.
