MOSES – 13 Steps

Germany 2024, 110 min
by Michael Wech

The documentary MOSES tells the life story of one of the greatest track and field athletes of all times.Edwin Moses grows up in a segregated America. As African-American athlete he overcomes obstacles life throws at him. Without a coach and without support he teaches himself the toughest discipline in track and field, the 400-meter hurdles – depicted as "maneater" by athletes and runners alike - and creates a historic winning streak that leaves his competitors, fans and journalists puzzled. 9 years, 9 months, and 9 days.Sporting success is one part of his story. The other is Edwin Moses' fight against inequality, injustice, and doping, for equal rights and equal treatment of people regardless of skin color and gender, and for adequate payment of athletes. The documentary enhances Moses' personal narrative by juxtaposing it with pivotal moments in world history, demonstrating how his triumphs mirrored significant global and societal changes. Featuring exclusive interviews with Moses himself, the film offers intimate insights into his thoughts, motivations, and the formidable challenges he faced.Contributing to the depth and perspective of this story are cultural icons and luminaries such as Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Lonnie Bunch of the Smithsonian Institution, Anita de Frantz, along with sports figures like Karsten Warholm, Tommie Smith, Mike Shine, Andre Phillips, Michael Johnson, Donna de Varona, and Danny Harris.Edwin Moses came to athletics rather by chance, his passions being engineering and his physics studies at the famous Morehouse College in Atlanta. His time as a Morehouse Man was particularly formative for his personality and sporting success. Moses developed into an outstanding athlete with a unique and self-invented running technique of 13 steps that gave him a huge advantage in races and left his competitors far behind for years. Between 1977 and 1987, Moses remained unbeaten in 122 consecutive races.Even during his career, he was a strong advocate of the fight against doping in sport. He was involved in the introduction of stricter doping controls and guidelines. His commitment helped to raise awareness of the issue and to this day, he remains a role model for fairness and integrity beyond the world of sport.Following his active career, Edwin Moses dedicated his life to being one of the Founding Chairmen of the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation. Nelson Mandela's famous speech at the foundation's launch is still a guideline and incentive for Edwin Moses today: "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does."202415 DOC NYCFFCGN Filmfestival Cologne

LONG DISTANCE SWIMMER – SARA MARDINI

2022, 88 min
by Charly W. Feldman

One moment champion Syrian swimmer Sara Mardini is Europe’s most celebrated refugee and humanitarian, the next she is a 'criminal mastermind'. While her sister competes as a swimmer at the Olympics, Sara awaits trial and a possible 25-year prison sentence. At 20, Sara was already famous. She fled Syria in 2015 with her younger sister Yusra. When their boat broke down as they were crossing the sea to Greece, Sara and Yusra jumped into the water. The sisters, both competitive swimmers, towed the boat to safety. Their journey made headlines around the world, and is dramatized in a Netflix film called The Swimmers. Our story begins when the fictionalised drama ends. Sara has spent three years rescuing refugees on the same journey that made her famous, but is suddenly arrested in August 2018, accused by Greek authorities of running a criminal enterprise and charged with “international espionage and people smuggling”. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison and the end of her humanitarian career. Banned from Lesbos and waiting for news of the trial, she lives a surreal existence in Berlin. Studying at a liberal arts college by day, escaping to techno clubs at night, she tries to reconnect with her family, while Yusra trains for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, a dream the two sisters once shared. Shot over a period of three years, the film follows Sara’s fight for justice and journey of self-discovery, and it illustrates Europe’s biggest shift in the last decade: from being a place that welcomed refugees to an environment hostile to those who dare pull drowning people out of the sea.

BLACK EAGLES

Germany 2021, 102 min
by Torsten Körner

When the German national football team lines up, the national anthem plays and the cameras study the faces before kick-off, it goes without saying that the players today have very different biographies. They are united by their pride in playing for Germany and competing against the best in the world. Their heraldic animal is the black eagle they wear on their jerseys. The eagle, which today suggests unity, also had an exclusionary message for a long time, because the German football hero was white thought of, dreamed of and revered. The feature-length documentary SCHWARZE ADLER lets Black players of the German national football team tell their personal stories. What road did they take before they got to where we cheer for them? What hurdles did they have to overcome? What prejudices and hostility did they face - and what was it like in the past, what is it like today? Accompanied by rarely shown archive pictures, which are sometimes as unexpected as they are disturbing, director Torsten Körner lets different generations of players have their say in his film. From Erwin Kostedde, who in 1974 was the first black player to make his debut in the national team, to Jimmy Hartwig and Steffi Jones, from Gerald Asamoah to Patrick Owomoyela and Cacau to Jean-Manuel Mbom: their stories not only tell of what it means to be the target of racist hostility in front of thousands of people in the stadium and millions watching on TV. They also shed light on how spectators, the media and German society deal with the issue of racism - and how slowly, seen from today's perspective, something has changed about this way of dealing in recent decades. With; Erwin Kostedde, Rigobert Gruber, Jimmy Hartwig, Steffi Jones, Gerald Asamoah, Patrick Owomoyela, Cacau (Claudemir Jerônimo Barreto), Jordan Torunarigha, Jean-Manuel Mbom, Shary Reeves, Anthony Baffoe, Otto Addo, Guy Acolatse, Beverly Ranger,
