    Synopsis

1983 in Germany the 'shipyard crisis' reached a climax: shipbuilding in Hamburg's HDW-Werk-Ross is to be discontinued and 1354 employees laid off.
After negotiations with the Executive Board of the Salzgitter Group, demonstrations and appeals to politicians remain ineffective. On September 16, 1983 the colleagues decide not only to go on strike but to squat the shipyard. A step that many could never have imagined.
At daily meetings the 'how to continue' is discussed under fears and hopes. A great wave of solidarity in Hamburg strengthens the resolve, but the Salzgitter Executive Board remains firm. After 9 days the occupation is canceled.
But the experience of unity and solidarity remains. Conclusion: '"That was a good exercise!."
