    Synopsis

Decided at the highest level - in the Council of Ministers - the only new art museum in the GDR was built in Rostock, with construction starting in 1964. As a "weapon" in the Cold War, the modern exhibition house was the focus of many political intentions. Despite tough disputes between artistic aspirations and ideological interests, between international orientation and provincial preservation of vested interests, the Kunsthalle developed into a magnet for the public.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, completely new perspectives opened up. However, the Kunsthalle was in danger of being torn apart between the artistic will for change and the dire financial conditions.
In the subtext, it is about the questions: what is art and what does it want - to entertain, to edify, to stimulate, to provoke or to be an investment?
