Synopsis
Three Armenias are sketched out here, brilliantly and with delicacy, through four protagonists aspiring to fulfil their dream. There is the lift operator in a hospital who wants to travel into space, the farmer in search of a perfect wife, and the young queer couple who simply want to live out their love story… while awaiting the demonstrations and hopes of the revolution. [Visions du Réel]In Yerevan, Armenia, people dream both big and small—of future plans they can actually make real, of desires that can only ever be fantasies and of ideals that may be possible but are too far off to touch. Karen is a lonely farmer who longs for a perfect bride, someone who must be just beyond the limitations of his rural village. At 64 years of age, Melania operates the hospital's outdated elevator but longs to be an astronaut exploring the stars. Two young women, Amasia and Sona, share their alt music and special friendship only on rooftops and basements, as neither is welcome in public. Filmmakers Vahagn Khachatryan and Aren Malakyan beautifully capture each dreamer's earnest pursuits, immersing us in the gorgeous worlds of their stories. But as our protagonists move forward, unseen forces upend them all, changing their and their country's future. [Myrocia Watamaniuk, Hot Docs]
