A documentary film journey across northern Chile retracing the steps of the author's ancestors, merchants from Hamburg, who acquired their wealth with saltpetre. The nitrate from Chile was 'white gold' to the Europeans; to the Chileans it was 'salt of the desert'. To the Europeans it meant, lasting wealth and to the Chileans, it meant short-lived profit. The salt dissolved and only the gold remained.

Our film is about Jews from Germany and Eastern Europe who, as young men and women, emigrated to Palestine in the thirties, under the influence of the Zionist movement, and helped to found the State of Israel.
