A documentary film journey across northern Chile retracing the steps of the author's ancestors, merchants from Hamburg, who acquired their wealth with saltpetre. The nitrate from Chile was 'white gold' to the Europeans; to the Chileans it was 'salt of the desert'. To the Europeans it meant, lasting wealth and to the Chileans, it meant short-lived profit. The salt dissolved and only the gold remained.
