Germany, after 1945: thousands of 'occupation babies' are born. Their mothers are German, their farthers from one of the occupation armies. British, Americans and Russians regard these children as a private matter - but not the French. They see a 'national treasure' to be brought home for adoption - an ambitious but scandalous project to stimulate France's demographic development. Robbed of their German identity, many adoptive children still know little about their roots. 'Enfants d'État' accomp
