Synopsis
The first story shows hard-working women at a time when 5 Potatoes - its title - could represent a great gift. Red Beets secretly obtained by a 10 year old girl for her two little brothers who are ill; she knows the severe punishment awaiting her if she gets caught. The documentary filmmaker was eight when his parents´ house burnt to the ground but he still remembers his joy when he was given Yeast Dumplings a few hours later and how wonderful they tasted. 'Bread, a little piece of bread - for years a prisoner can think of nothing else. Feeling really ful is the dream of a man who has enoughto eat but whose ruined body reacts to the slightest weight gain with unbearable pain.The Nestor of German documentary film has opened his archive and interwoven scenes from past films with an autobiographical sketch: food as the basis of security in war and peace.
