10th Young Women Cinematographers Award Documentary goes to Paola Calvo for VIOLENTLY HAPPY

The Young Women Cinematographers competition is celebrating a special birthday. This unique award, which aims to significantly increase the number of women working in cinematography, is being presented for the tenth time. The award recognises the work of young directors of photography and is intended to support them in their future careers.
The award winners in 2018 is Paola Calvo in the documentary film category for VIOLENTLY
HAPPY, which she also directed.

"VIOLENTLY HAPPY offers us an intimate insight into what is for most people an alien world of pain, controlled violence and alternative sexuality. Paola's sympathetic perspective allows us to immerse ourselves in a new realm, not pornographic or voyeuristic, yet still explicit. The film invites us to follow the dramaturgy of the camera: it starts with pictures of bodies and hones in more and more on the details of their sexuality.
This intimacy creates a new open space in which viewers are given the time to discover for themselves."

The Special Mention of this award for best up-and-coming director of photography goes to Julia Geiß for her camera work on Kerstin Polte's Portrait of the HipHop artist SOOKEE.

The audience Award goes to Bernadett Tuza-Ritter and her documentary A WOMAN CAPTURED.
