Synopsis
Viele indische Bauern stehen vor dem Ruin, weil ihnen die 2002 erstmals zugelassene BT-Baumwolle, eine gentechnisch veränderte Baumwolle von Monsanto, katastrophale Ernten beschert hatte.
Die Hoffnung auf höhere Erträge und weniger Chemieeinsatz verführte die Bauern, das vier Mal so teure Gen-Saatgut zu kaufen. Doch die erwartete Superernte blieb aus. Krankheiten und vermehrter Schädlingsbefall zwangen die Bauern zu noch mehr Einsatz von teuren Chemikalien und trieben die Bankschulden in die Höhe. Der einzige Ausweg aus dieser Schuldenfalle ist für viele Bauern der Selbstmord. In ganz Indien waren das in den letzten Jahren über 20.000 Bauern.
Die promovierte Teilchenphysikerin, Autorin und Kämpferin für die Umwelt – Vandana Shiva – engagiert sich seit mehr als 20 Jahren für das Lebensrecht indischer Kleinbauern und die Erhaltung der Artenvielfalt. „Monsanto – raus aus Indien“ ist die Kampfansage von Vandana Shiva an die internationalen Agrochemiekonzerne.
