Vorbei an Giraffen und Antilopen schleppt eine schwer bepackte Karawane aus Dromedaren regelmäßig Lesestoff in die unwegsame Savanne. Kinder und Erwachsene der muslimischen Nomadenvölker warten sehnsüchtig in ihren Hütten aus Holz und Dung auf die Wüstenschiffe. Gierig blättern sie unter Akazienbäumen in Schulbüchern, Romanen und Comic-Heften. 400 Kilometer von der Hauptstadt Nairobi entfernt kämpfen die örtlichen Bibliothekare dennoch mit Analphabetismus, überkommenen Traditionen, fehlendem Geld, glutheißer Sonne und – störrischen Kamelen… Es ist die Geschichte wissensdurstiger Kinder, eines entstehenden Buches, eines Kamels und eines ungewöhnlichen Bibliothekars im Herzen Afrikas inmitten der UNESCO-Weltdekade der Alphabetisierung.
