Der Film mit dem Untertitel „Die wundersame Geschichte eines Linkshänders“ erzählt die Geschichte des Handballers Wolfgang Böhme, Kapitän der DDR-Auswahl, der 1980 kurz vor den Olympischen Spielen in Moskau aus der Mannschaft fliegt. Ein Schicksal nimmt seinen Lauf. Der Film sucht nach Hintergründen dieses Willküraktes des DDR-Handballs. Wolfgangs Mannschaftskameraden Klaus Langhoff und Wieland Schmidt kommen zu Wort. Und auch die damaligen bundesrepublikanischen Gegenspieler: Vlado Stenzel, Kurt Kühspies, Heiner Brand. Mit Fernseh-Dokumenten der deutsch-deutschen Handball-Schlachten, über Wolfgangs Tagebücher, den Stasi-Akten bis hin zum DEFA-Streifen „Die Jagd nach dem Stiefel“, in dem die Zwillinge als Kinder eine Hauptrolle spielten, versucht der Film jenseits herkömmlicher Schuldzuweisungen differenzierte Einblicke zu ermöglichen und vermittelt eine Charakterstudie staunenswerter Brüderlichkeit.
