Diesmal wollte die Bevölkerung offenbar den „letzten Diktator Europas“, Alexander Lukaschenko, nicht noch einmal an der Staatsspitze sehen. Viele unterstützten das Frauenteam um Swetlana Tichanowskaja. Doch Lukaschenko ließ das Ergebnis fälschen und erklärte sich zum Sieger. Gegen diesen Betrug und die Willkür des Staatsapparates protestierten Hunderttausende Menschen aus allen Teilen der Bevölkerung - das hatte es in diesem Ausmaß in der jahrzehntelangen Herrschaft Lukaschenkos noch nie gegeben. Seine Reaktion: Das Regime schlug die friedlichen Proteste mit brutaler Gewalt nieder, inhaftierte die Demonstranten, ließ viele von ihnen misshandeln und foltern. Swetlana Tichanowskaja und andere führende Oppositionelle mussten ins Ausland fliehen.
