Venice is pure romance; that which all Europeans yearn for, the dream of all Americans, the wish of all Japanese. But the world's most beautiful city turns into a ghost town at nightfall. Entire quarters stand empty, their structures merely providing a myth to serve business interests. 20 million foreigners visit the city each year. An average of 60,000 a day. By comparison, there are only 58,000 inhabitants left. And next year it will be fewer still. For the city is becoming uninhabitable. The film shows what remains of Venetian life: a subculture of tourist service industries; a port for monstrous cruisers;Venetians who are moving to the mainland as there are no longer affordable apartments to be found.A Requiem for a still grand city. An illustration of how common property becomes the prey of few.An elegy to the last Venetians, their humour and their hearts.

Dementia, a diagnosis that changes everything for those who are affected and for their relatives. Accepting the disease can seem just as difficult as finding an appropriate approach. But perhaps it is much more about compassion than about understanding? In an observational way, THE INNER LIGHT explores the everyday lives of people with dementia and focuses mainly on positive situations and encounters. The film tries to offer a poetic interpretation of this special state of being and aims at reducing fears in dealing with people with dementia and at accepting each person’s humanity.www.theinnerlight-film.com

The documentary film WE WERE REBELS tells the story of Agel, a former child soldier who returns to South Sudan to help build up his country. The film accompanies him over a period of two years – from South Sudan gaining its independence in 2011 to the renewed outbreak of civil war in December 2013. As captain of the national basketball team of South Sudan – the youngest country in the world – Agel coaches the team through their very first international match against Uganda. The conflicts within the team bear a striking resemblance to the political problems festering across the country. An injury ends up forcing Agel to leave the basketball team, and he goes on to form an NGO that provides the country’s most remote areas with clean drinking water. His journeys give him time to reflect on his country – on how it was, how it is, and how he hopes it will be one day.As a child soldier, Agel had to kill and also lost almost all of his male relatives. Later he managed to flee via Kenya to Australia, where he became a professional basketball player and returned to South Sudan as a free man. Today, just two years after gaining its independence, the world’s youngest nation is once again teetering on the edge of a precipice: More than half a million people are fleeing the country, and Agel is fighting as a soldier once again.

Djemaa el-Fna is a marketplace in Marrakesh filled with dance, song, stories, acrobatics, magic tricks and fortune-telling. The onlookers gather in so-called "halqas", or circles, around the performers and storytellers to admire their artistry and skill. The UNESCO placed this location on its list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. The interactive walk-in room sculpture by Thomas Ladenburger and Hannes Nehls attempts to reconstruct this unique location with the aid of projectors, light, film and acoustics. The ubiquitous tradition of oral storytelling is hardly cultivated anymore in Central Europe and has probably never possessed the performative energy that radiates from Djemaa el-Fna. This installation will go on display in Berlin and Paris. Venues and schedule: House of World Cultures, Berlin, February - March 2011 Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; September 2011

GLITTER AND DUST is a documentary film about girls who do manly things in the male dominated world of rodeo and who try to find their own path in the process.Maysun does everything she can to gain her father's recognition, to meet his expectations - as a girl.Tatyanna (17) is competing as a bullrider for the Navajo team. Not only is she one of a few girls riding bulls, she is doing so without a helmet or protection. Although they move about in the powerful imagery of the American prairie and the myths of the Wild West, they give it new resonance and break free of it. In today's world, where many people yearn for the authoritarian systems of yesteryear, GLITTER & DUST tells the story of cowgirls who seek a new tomorrow in their conservative homeland.
