In TIME WILL TELL, we return to some of the protagonists from my earlier films of the ‘Leipzig Series’. During the political upheaval in late-1989/early-1990, Isabel, Jenny and Sven were teenagers of fourteen and fifteen and still attending school. The dramatic social changes following the collapse of East Germany hit them head on during their most formative years. The protagonists from my films ‘Last Year Titanic’ (1990), ‘Faith, Love, Hope’ (1994), and ‘The Big Wide World’ (1997) are now in their late-30s. They’ve been living in the Federal Republic of Germany longer than they lived in East Germany. The paths their lives have taken could hardly be much different. Our new film revolves around these three protagonists and their lives today, twenty-five years after the first film: ISABEL the former punk is now a liquidator. JENNY is on a quest to unravel her family’s ill-fated history. SVEN is struggling through life unemployed.

Detlef Gumm and Hans-Georg Ullrich began working on their long-term observational documentary BERLIN - ECKE BUNDESPLATZ twenty-four years ago. Their plan was to make a series of short and longerfilms documenting the fortunes of several inhabitants of an ordinary Berlin neighbourhood as theymoved towards the year 2000. The protagonists were a typical cross-section of people living in an oldquarter of West-Berlin, and so, in their film, widows, a high-flying lawyer, drop-outs, owners of smallbusinesses and a single mother became chroniclers of their Wilmersdorf world. These films are, like their authors and the people portrayed in the films, a part of this area of Berlin.BERLIN - ECKE BUNDESPLATZ is a declaration of love to generations of people who have never stoppedstruggling and dreaming. The titles of the Episodes are©2009MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERSTHE DROPOUTSIT IS BEAUTIFUL TO BE YOUNGTHE KOEPCKE GANGTHE YILMAZ-CLAN©2013A BAKER ON THE BREAD-LINELIFE OF LEISURECHIMNEY SWEEPSHAPPY FAMILY

Robert Jay Lifton a prominent Jewish psychiatrist and author visited 80 Auschwitz survivors and 40 Holocaust perpetrators, mainly former Nazi physicians. He describes as a second generation eye witness how ordinary doctors change from healers to killers. The film's aim is to bring to life things which were embedded deep in the psyche of people. The pictures and the shocking truth Lifton evokes in the minds of the audience turned out to be more moving and impressive than all the historical material which mostly discriminate against the victims. The "Frankfurter Rundschau" wrote "this remarkable film succeed the work of Claude Lanzmann. It leads to the spiritual world of the killing doctors only by cautious, pensive views of the landscape behind Lifton's study and only by the power of words." The filmmaker, well known for their awarded portraits of the trade unionist Willi Bleicher, who saved the Child of Buchenwald and Pastor Martin Niemoeller, the Man who defied Hitler, present an amazing interview-film about the research of the US-psychiatrist and author Robert Jay Lifton. ... (Andreas Wirwatski / Filmecho/Filmwoche) ... Lifton is a fascinating and emphatic narrator and in spite of the cruelty of his research it is a pleasure to listen to his dramatic analysis of meeting perpetrators and victims. ... (Peter Steinhart / Rheinische Post) ... Talking Heads documentaries are usually almost unbearable. But in this film the long and precise close-up or medium shots create a favourable impression and make it possible to learn how Lifton's thoughts develop ... (Wilhelm Roth / epd Film)
